Burning Man is a community. A temporary city. A global cultural movement based on 10 practical principles.
This event is described as an experiment in community and art, influenced by ten main principles: "radical" inclusion, self-reliance, and self-expression, as well as community cooperation, civic responsibility, gifting, decommodification, participation, immediacy, and leaving no trace.
Burning Man is a network of people inspired by the values reflected in the pursuit of a more creative and connected existence in the world.
Throughout the year we work to build Black Rock City, home of the largest annual Burning Man gathering.
The event takes its name from its culmination, the symbolic ritual burning of a large wooden effigy ("the Man") that traditionally occurs on the Saturday evening of the event.
Mission
The mission of the Burning Man organization is to facilitate and extend the culture that has issued from the Burning Man event into the larger world.
Our intention is to generate a society that connects each individual to his or her creative powers, to participation in community and to the even greater world of nature that exists beyond society.
Vision
The Burning Man organization will bring experiences to people in inspiring and joyful ways that lift the human spirit, address social problems and inspire a sense of culture, community and personal engagement.
People
From the founders to the first-time volunteer, the entire history of Black Rock City is one of people stepping up and taking charge.
